| On 7 May 2003, I picked up an interesting bit of polished stone in a shop. It's about 5cm wide and 3cm high, and it looks rather like a lump of caramel with tiny gold flecks embedded in it. The matrix appears to be translucent, so the flecks appear to be at different depths, but so far I haven't been able to confirm that it isn't an illusion. It's really quite striking; these photographs really don't do it justice. The first few are taken with the stone on a piece of black crêpe cloth, some with the flash and some with ambient light. The cloth shows up as the background in at least one of the shots. |
